The Big Society David Cameron launched the Big Society at Liverpool Hope University in July 2010.

The Prime Minister believes the Big Society will improve public services and breathe new life into communities.

Others see it as cover for spending cuts and, potentially, the beginning of the end of the welfare state.

The Referendum on the Alternative Vote As part of the coalition agreement there will be a referendum on the introduction of the Alternative Vote (AV) on 5 May 2011.

But, why on earth did the Lib Dems agree to a referendum on AV?

Modern UK Politics

We are working on a new textbook for Higher Modern Studies.

This will be the follow up to our existing, highly successful book Modern UK Politics.

Modern UK Politics 2 will be published shortly after the Scottish parliamentary and council elections of 2011.

With the next UK General election not expected till May 2015, you should have a comprehensive account of UK politics for 4/5 years.

Modern UK Politics and A Curriculum for Excellence

A Curriculum for Excellence (ACfE) is the Scottish Government's key initiative to improve education in Scotland.

It seeks to improve not just attainment in National Qualifications, but wider skills and capacities in young people for participation in a global society.

These are;

  • Developing successful learners
  • Developing confident individuals
  • Developing responsible citizens
  • Developing effective contributors

Her Majesty's Inspectorate for Education (HMIe) has published an important document on what ACfE means for Modern Studies.

Likewise, Learning Teaching Scotland (LTS) has a website dedicated to good practice in developing A Curriculum for Excellence.
